THE ENCHANTING BEAUTY

OF CANTABRIA

Cantabria, a breathtaking region in Northern Spain, offers an extraordinary blend of natural beauty, rich history, and cultural vibrancy. Framed by the rugged peaks of the Picos de Europa to the south and the pristine beaches of the Bay of Biscay to the north, Cantabria is a paradise for both nature enthusiasts and history buffs. We fell in love with this beautiful region of Spain.

CHARMING ESCAPES: DISCOVERING THE ENCHANTING TOWNS OF CANTABRIA

POTES: GATEWAY TO PICOS DE EUROPA

Nestled in the heart of Northern Spain, the Picos de Europa National Park stands as a majestic natural wonder, with rugged peaks and breathtaking vistas.

Our day began with a biking descent from San Glorio in the Picos de Europa. The bike ride down the scenic routes, surrounded by towering peaks and lush valleys allowed us to take in the crisp mountain air and breathtaking vistas. We were treated to the sight of horses roaming freely, adding an extra touch of magic to our journey down.

Our venture led us to a quaint dairy in Pendes, where we were treated to a tour of the cheese-making process and ended tasting the locally crafted cheeses. Delicious! And then a visit to Bodegas Picos where we tasted, and yes bought, some delicious orujo, a wonderful drink to have after a meal.

Our day ended with a stroll through the charming streets of Potes viewing its historic bridges, ancient towers, and the tranquil Deva River.

It was an amazing experience and we would recommend it to anyone seeking a blend of history, culture, and natural beauty in Northern Spain.

SANTILLANA DEL MAR: A STEP BACK IN TIME

Our venture then led us inland to Santillana del Mar, often described as a "living museum" due to its impeccably preserved medieval architecture. Strolling through its cobblestone streets felt like stepping back in time. The town’s rich history was palpable as we explored the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria, where we enjoyed a glass of wine right in front of this majestic structure, soaking in the serene atmosphere and admiring the beautiful ancient stone buildings adorned with colorful flowers.

For those with a penchant for the macabre, the Museo de la Tortura offered a fascinating, if chilling, glimpse into the darker aspects of history. Despite its grim exhibits, it was an intriguing stop that added a unique dimension to our visit.

Our stay at the lovely Casa del Marqués was the perfect complement to the town’s enchanting atmosphere. This charming hotel, nestled in the heart of the old town, offered cozy, rustic rooms with wooden beams and antique furnishings. Each morning, we savored delicious local pastries and fresh coffee in the quaint courtyard, setting the perfect tone for a day of exploration.

In the evenings, we took leisurely strolls through the town, discovering hidden corners and picturesque views at every turn. Santillana del Mar’s timeless beauty and tranquil charm made it a perfect start to our Cantabrian journey.

CASTRO URDIALES: COASTAL CHARMS AND CULINARY DELIGHTS

Our final stop was the picturesque fishing village of Castro Urdiales. This coastal gem welcomed us with its charming harbor, lined with colorful boats and seafood restaurants. The Gothic-style Church of Santa María and the medieval Castle of Santa Ana added historical depth to our visit, standing proudly against the backdrop of the sparkling sea.

In Castro Urdiales, we indulged in the town’s culinary delights, savoring fresh seafood dishes that highlighted the region’s rich maritime heritage. We had amazing sardines and fish at Asador Perla, a seasonal gem open only in the summers. The vibrant local bars added to the experience, offering a lively atmosphere where we enjoyed traditional pintxos and refreshing glasses of local wine. As we hopped from one bar to another, we relished the camaraderie and the diverse flavors, making our evenings in Castro Urdiales as memorable as the stunning coastal views.
