We did this goslow road trip ourselves, winding through scenic settings and being treated to breathtaking views at every turn. What truly made this journey extraordinary was the incredible food and exquisite wine we encountered along the way. From charming seaside towns to hidden culinary gems, every stop offered a new and delicious adventure, complemented by some of the finest wines we've ever tasted. Start your goslow coastal road trip by flying into Bilbao, the gateway to northern Spain's stunning coastline. With its vibrant culture and rich history, Bilbao is the perfect launching point for your adventure. During our two-day stay, we had ample time to settle in and fully immerse ourselves in all that Bilbao has to offer.

Bilbao Airport is conveniently located just 13 kilometers (8 miles) from the city center, making for a quick and easy drive of about 15-20 minutes. The rental car companies we have used the most are Rentalcars.com and Auto Europe, both of which offer affordable options. TIP: purchase the insurance along with your rental and decline any insurance they may offer at the rental counter; insurance purchased at the counter is more costly!

After arriving in Bilbao, we recommend first checking into your accommodations to rest and refresh or to drop your bags off and explore the city.

WHERE TO STAY

For your stay in Bilbao, you have the option of choosing either an Airbnb, VRBO (or the like) or a hotel. On this road trip, we opted to book an Airbnb in the charming Casco Viejo, which is centrally located with several attractions within walking distance, including some of the best pintxos bars in the city.

If you prefer a hotel, we highly recommend Sercotel Arenal Bilbao. This delightful hotel is our go-to choice when we opt for a hotel stay. It is ideally located in the heart of the city, within walking distance of the old town, the Guggenheim Museum, and numerous dining options. Additionally, there is a safe and affordable underground parking garage, called Parking Arenal Bilbao, just a few meters away, a 4-minute walk from the hotel. This makes it easy to park your rental car and explore the city on foot.

Lunch at a Traditional Cider House: Indulge in a leisurely lunch at a traditional Basque cider house. We've been to Petritegi Sagardotegia Cider House many times and always had a great time. Enjoy hearty dishes paired with local cider, and experience the unique tradition of pouring cider from a height to aerate the drink.

Ride the Funicular de Artxanda: Take a scenic ride on the Funicular de Artxanda to experience Bilbao from a different perspective. The funicular offers a relaxing and convenient way to see panoramic views of the city and surrounding landscapes, allowing you to soak in the sights without the rush.

Hop-On Hop-Off Bus: Start your visit with a ride on the hop-on hop-off bus to orient yourself and see all the sights you may want to come back and visit. It's a great way to get an overview of the city's layout and main attractions.

About an hour drive from Bilbao, Gaztelugatxe is a must-visit on your Northern Spain itinerary. This dramatic island, connected to the mainland by a winding stone bridge, features a stunning hermitage perched atop its peak. The hike up the 241 steps is rewarded with breathtaking views of the Bay of Biscay and the rugged coastline. A perfect day trip for nature lovers and adventure seekers! Climb Mount San Antón: For a bit of adventure, hike up Mount San Antón, also known as the "Mouse of Getaria." The trail offers stunning views of the town and coastline, and the summit provides a perfect spot to take in the panoramic scenery.

Walk to Zarautz: Take a scenic walk along the coastal path from Getaria to Zarautz. This beautiful route offers stunning views of the Bay of Biscay and lush landscapes. Upon arriving in Zarautz, enjoy the town's expansive beach and vibrant surf culture.

As you wander through Hondarribia's colorful streets and savor its culinary delights, you'll quickly see why this hidden gem is a must-visit destination on our leisurely journey.
